In the footsteps of Hillary

Rhododendron forests and endless mountain vistas

PIKEY PEAK ITINERARY

From the summit of Pikey Peak it is possible to view Mt. Everest, some 65 km to the north east, and several other Himalayan giants. Unlike the trade routes to the north, you will meet very few trekkers.Pikey Peak trails take you through the lower regions of Solukhumbu. Filled with natural wonders, you also get to experience the Sherpa culture of northern Nepal. 

Day 1: Arrive at Kathmandu and transfer to hotel 

Upon your arrival in the Kathmandu airport, you will be met and  transferred to your hotel. 

Day 2: Kathmandu Sightseeing   

After breakfast we set out on a guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu valleys cultural, historical, religious (world heritage) sites. During the day, we visit the famous Pashupatinath temple of Lord Shiva situated at the holy bank of River Bagmati where we will also observe the Hindu cremation ritual. We then proceed to the Boudhanath Stupa, a major pilgrimage centre for the Buddhist faith which also is the largest of its kind in the world. We then have a short break for lunch followed by a visit to Swayambhunath stupa also known as the Monkey Temple from where we can have a bird's eye view of the of Kathmandu valley.

Following this, we visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, the oldest royal palace of Kathmandu and a UNESCO world heritage site. The area of Kathmandu Durbar Square is home to fascinating Nepalese architectural pieces dating back many centuries. The site is also the home to Nepal's living Goddess 'Kumari.' In the evening we will attend the welcome dinner with a live Nepalese culture show.

Day 3: Drive to Dhap (9 hours)

You'll start the day with a long (8-9 hour) drive from Kathmandu to Dhap. The drive heads north through subtropical forests of pine and dense rhododendrons, passing several countryside villages, beautiful landscapes, and valleys until reaching Dhap Bazaar. 

You can spend the afternoon walking around the local shops and if the skies are clear, you will get great mountain views. Overnight lodge 

Day 4: Trek Dhap to Sigane (2820m. 4-5hours) 

From a ridgeline south of Dhap, you'll start the trek. The route follows a local road all the way to the village of Sigane, arriving in time for lunch.

Day 5: Trek Sigane to Bhulbhule (3500m, 4-5 hours)

The trail today continues to follow the road which is partly under construction for a few hours until you reach the tiny village of Jhapre, perched above a deep valley with nice views of Everest and Himal. You will then get incredible views of Numbur Chuli, Everest, and the eastern Himalayan range  after leaving Jhapre . The trail then heads up a gentle uphill climb through pine and rhododendron forests until you reach Bhulbule There is a pretty little Buddhist gompa and stupa here just north of the village.  Overnight Lodge

Day 6: Bhulbhule to Pikey Peak Base Camp (3640m, 4-5 hours)

After leaving Bhulbhule, the route continues with a gentle uphill climb, until you get to Lhamuje  to stop for tea. Afterwards, the trail begins a series of gentle ups and downs along the ridge, which eventually arrives at a pasture where you can see grazing yaks. You'll pass a Mani wall and then will climb a steep uphill zigzag trail to Pikey Peak Base Camp. Overnight lodge

Day 7: Acclimitisation day

Today is a day to acclimatise and do a short hike

Day 8: Asend Pikey Peak (4065m) - trek to Jase Bhanjyang (3550m) - 3 hours plus 3/4 hours.

We will get an early start to reach the summit of Pikey Peak for the best sunrise views. From the Pikey peak on a clear day one can take in  grand views of mountain peaks like Dhaulagiri, Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Ama Dablan, Lhotse, Nupatse, Numbur, Gaurisankhar, Langtang to the far west. Additionally, Pikey peak rewards tourists with one of the best sunrise and sunset views. 

We then return to the lodge for breakfast before starting our trek down which of course, being the himalaya have several ascents and descents. First we will trek to Lamjura Danda and then continue down through a rhododendron and pine forest to Jase Bhanjyang. Overnight Lodge.

Day 9: Descend to Junbesi (2675m,4/5 hours.)

After breakfast we continue to head through the forest and an open meadow until we reach the village called Taktor. We will probably stop for lunch in this village and then continue the trek towards Junbesi along a wide dirt road. Before arriving in Junbesi, you can visit the Buddhist Monastery. 

Junbesi is a beautiful village with Buddhist Stupa, and comfortable tea houses. Overnight Lodge. 

Day 10: Visit Hillary School and Thupten Chholing Monastery

Today we enjoy exploring the beautiful region of Junbesi. After breakfast, we walk to Thupten Choling and visit its imposing monastic complex, one of the most important in the Sherpa world of Solukhumbu. Thubten Choling is also a monastic school where more than a hundred Tibetan monks and nuns live and study. The monastery harbours beautiful views of the Junbesi Valley. The Hillary school was opened in 1961, Khumjung School was the first in the region, and the first of a number of schools built by Hillary. In 1963, It was followed by two more schools set up by Hillary In the villages of Pangboche and ThamI with the approval of the Nepalese Government.

Day 11: Trek to Phaplu (2413m,  3/4 hours).

Today, we'll continue along the Junbesi Khola's descending sandy trail until we reach a steel suspension bridge. After continuing we will arrive at Beni Ghat and then on to Paplu. 

Day 12: Light aircraft flight to Kathmandu

This morning we fly from Paplu to Kathmandu and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 13: Leisure

Day at leisure for further sightseeing or shopping

Day 14: Depart

Transfer to the airport for your flight home. Trip ends.
